Despite increased communication via Remind this year, there seems to be more confusion than in years past about volunteer hours, so this memo is an attempt to clear this up. Much of this information was also on your acceptance letter.
- How many hours do I have to submit? You have to get a total of 15 volunteer hours (or equivalent credits; we will sometimes give credits for donations that will count as a credit).
- Are there any specific activities I have to do? Seven (7) of your hours need to come from NHS sponsored activities. Those opportunities will be through Rally for Ally events, SURE events, and Project Elf donations or wrapping volunteer days. These opportunities will continue through next semester.
- How do I get my other eight hours? You are responsible for being proactive for your other ten hours and finding volunteer opportunities. We do not arrange all of your volunteer opportunities for you like some other organization do because this group is a combination of students who excel in many areas, not just one academic discipline, and we want you to have the opportunity to engage in service in an area of your own personal interest.
- What type of hours don't count? Activities we do not count as volunteer hours include events that occur during the school day (like Special Olympics or Read Across America) and events that are self-serving, such as decorating for a school dance.
- Can I submit hours from this summer that I already used on my application? Activities must not have been submitted already on your application. Many juniors have been asking if they can submit their summer volunteer work, and the answer to that is no. You must submit hours that were completed after you were accepted into NHS.

Independent Volunteering Suggestions
These do not count for your 7 NHS sponsored hours. This is just a resource if you need help getting started on your independent hours.
